Title: The impact of new neutrino DIS and Drell-Yan data on large-x parton distributions

Abstract

New data sets have recently become available for neutrino and antineutrino deep inelastic scattering on nuclear targets and for inclusive dimuon production in pp pd interactions. These data sets are sensitive to different combinations of parton distribution functions in the large-x region and, therefore, provide different constraints when incorporated into global parton distribution function fits. We compare and contrast the effects of these new data on parton distribution fits, with special emphasis on the effects at large x. The effects of the use of nuclear targets in the neutrino and antineutrino data sets are also investigated.

  • We present a next-to-leading-order QCD structure-function analysis of deep-inelastic muon and neutrino scattering data. In particular, we incorporate new {ital F}{sub 2}{sup {mu}{ital n}}/{ital F}{sub 2}{sup {mu}{ital p}} data and take account of a recent reanalysis of SLAC data. The fit is performed simultaneously with next-to-leading-order fits to recent prompt photon and Drell-Yan data. As a result we are able to place tighter constraints on the quark and gluon distributions. Two definitive sets of parton distributions are presented according to whether the European Muon Collaboration or Bologna-CERN-Dubna-Munich-Saclay Collaboration muon data are included in the global fit. Comparisons with distributions obtainedmore » in earlier analyses are made and the consistency of data sets is investigated.« less
  • We determine the parton distributions of the pion from a consistent next-to-leading-order analysis of several high-statistics {pi}{sup {plus minus}}{ital N} experiments including both Drell-Yan and prompt photon production.
  • We study the chiral-odd spin structure functions of the nucleon, {ital h}{sub 1}({ital x}) and {ital h}{sub 2}({ital x}), their physical significance, sum rules, and model estimates. We show that they can be measured in the Drell-Yan process with polarized beams at order {ital Q}{sup 0} and {ital Q}{sup {minus}1}, respectively.
