Title: Semileptonic B decays at BaBar

Abstract

This paper summarizes the content of a talk given by the author at the Lake Louise Winter Institute, on February 21st 2007. It presents recent measurements of the rates for semileptonic B decays using data collected by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

  • The study of the semileptonic B decays at BABAR is presented. The results shown include measurements of the moments of hadronic-mass and electron-energy of the decay B {yields} X{sub c}{ell}{nu}; a determination of the |V{sub cb}| CKM matrix element and other heavy quark parameters from a simultaneous fit to the moments using kinetic scheme of Operator Product Expansion; a measurement of the inclusive branching fraction of B {yields} X{sub u}{ell}{nu} and determination of |V{sub ub}|. The most recent BABAR search for the lepton flavor violating decays {tau} {yields} {ell}{ell}{ell} is presented as well.
  • The value of |V{sub cb}| has been measured recently from a simultaneous fit to moments of the hadronic-mass and lepton-energy distributions in inclusive semileptonic B-mesons decays with a precision of 2%. Both exclusive and inclusive measurements of |V{sub ub}| have also been carried out in B {yields} X{sub u}{ell}{nu} decays. Precision measurements of the mixing parameter, {Delta}m{sub d}, have been obtained. In addition, direct limits on the total decay-rate difference {Delta}{Lambda} between the two B{sup 0} mass eigenstates and on CP, T and CPT violation due exclusively to oscillations have recently been provided by BaBar.

  • The authors report results from the BABAR Collaboration on the semileptonic B decays, highlighting the measurements of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements V{sub ub} and V{sub cb}. They describe the techniques used to obtain the matrix element |V{sub cb}| using the measurement of the inclusive B {yields} X{sub c}{ell}{nu} process and a large sample of exclusive B {yields} D*{ell}{nu} decays. The |V{sub ub}| matrix elements has been measured studying the hadronic mass distribution M{sub X} and the lepton spectra at the endpoint for the B {yields} X{sub u}{ell}{nu} process.
  • The latest results of exclusive charmless semileptonic decays B {yields} {pi}{ell}v and B {yields} {rho}{ell}v from the BABAR Collaboration are presented. They are based on samples of B{bar B} events recorded on the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance. Several different experimental techniques are compared. Measurements of partial branching fractions in intervals of q{sup 2}, the four-momentum transfer squared, allow a study of the shape of the B {yields} {pi}{ell}v form factor and a comparison with theoretical calculations. The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V{sub ub}| is determined using the measured branching fractions combined with recent form-factor predictions.
