Title: Spore collection and elimination apparatus and method

Abstract

The present invention is for a spore collection apparatus and its method of use. The portable spore collection apparatus includes a suction source, a nebulizer, an ionization chamber and a filter canister. The suction source collects the spores from a surface. The spores are activated by heating whereby spore dormancy is broken. Moisture is then applied to the spores to begin germination. The spores are then exposed to alpha particles causing extinction.

  • This patent describes an apparatus for separating NO{sub x} and SO{sub x} molecules from a combustion exhaust gas stream. It comprises means for directing the exhaust gas stream through an elongated passageway; and means for establishing a logarithmic potential across that passageway which will cause separation of the NO{sub x} and SO{sub x} molecules from the exhaust gas stream based on the permanent dipole moments of the molecule, the means for establishing a logarithmic potential comprising radially spaced conductors in the passageway and means for applying a DC voltage between the conductors to establish the logarithmic potential necessary to causemore » separation of the NO{sub x} and SO{sub x} molecules from the exhaust gas stream, the elongated passageway defining one of the conductors and the other of the conductors defined by a wire of finite length, a series of circumferentially spaced slots in axially spaced relation to the wire, the means for establishing a logarithmic potential causing the NO{sub x} and SO{sub x} to be deflected through the slots.« less
  • A method is described of determining the induced polarization response of a formation in which a borehole is disposed, comprising: lowering a logging tool into the borehole, the logging tool having a first set of two electrodes and a second set of two electrodes; conducting a first current between the electrodes of the first set of electrodes and through the formation; detecting with the second set of electrodes a first voltage produced in the formation by the first current; determining a first phase response from the detected first voltage; determining the resistivity of the formation from the conducted first currentmore » and the detected first voltage; determining the contact resistances individually of each of the electrodes of the first set of two electrodes and the second set of two electrodes; replacing the first set of two electrodes and the second set of two electrodes with a dummy load simulating the resistivity of the formation and the contact resistances of each of the electrodes; conducting a second current through the dummy load; detecting a second voltage produced in the dummy load by the second current; determining a second phase response from the second detected voltage, the second phase response indicating the electromagnetic coupling; and subtracting the second phase response from the first phase response to obtain a corrected induced polarized response of the formation.« less
  • The apparatus for collecting radiant energy and converting same to alternate energy form includes a housing having an interior space and a radiation transparent window allowing, for example, solar radiation to be received in the interior space of the housing. Means are provided for passing a stream of fluid past said window and for injecting radiation absorbent particles in said fluid stream. The particles absorb the radiation and because of their very large surface area, quickly release the heat to the surrounding fluid stream. The fluid stream particle mixture is heated until the particles vaporize. The fluid stream is thenmore » allowed to expand in, for example, a gas turbine to produce mechanical energy. In an aspect of the present invention properly sized particles need not be vaporized prior to the entrance of the fluid stream into the turbine, as the particles will not damage the turbine blades. In yet another aspect of the invention, conventional fuel injectors are provided to inject fuel into the fluid stream to maintain the proper temperature and pressure of the fluid stream should the source of radiant energy be interrupted. In yet another aspect of the invention, an apparatus is provided which includes means for providing a hot fluid stream having hot particles disbursed therein which can radiate energy, means for providing a cooler fluid stream having cooler particles disbursed therein, which particles can absorb radiant energy and means for passing the hot fluid stream adjacent the cooler fluid stream to warm the cooler fluid and cooler particles by the radiation from the hot fluid and hot particles.« less
  • Device for separating and collecting ultrafine atomized powder from the gas stream of a gas atomizing apparatus comprises a housing having an interior wall oriented at an angle relative to horizontal so as to form a downwardly converging, conical expansion chamber, an inlet conduit communicated to the expansion chamber proximate an upper region thereof for receiving the gas stream, and an outlet proximate a lower region of the expansion chamber. The inlet conduit is oriented at a compound inclined angle (with respect to horizontal) selected to promote separation and collection of powder from the gas stream in the expansion chamber.more » The compound angle comprises a first entrance angle that is greater than the angle of repose of the powder on the housing interior wall such that any powder accumulation in the inlet conduit tends to flow down the wall toward the outlet. The second angle is selected generally equal to the angle of the housing interior wall measured from the same horizontal plane so as to direct the gas stream into the expansion chamber generally tangent to the housing interior wall to establish a downward swirling gas stream flow in the expansion chamber. A powder collection container is communicated to the outlet of the expansion chamber to collect the powder for further processing.« less
  • An apparatus and method for the collection of respirable particles and concentration of such particles into a small fluid volume. The apparatus captures and concentrates small (1-10 .mu.m) respirable particles into a sub-millileter volume of fluid. The method involves a two step operation, collection and concentration: wherein collection of particles is by a wetted surface having small vertical slits that act as capillary channels; and concentration is carried out by transfer of the collected particles to a small volume (sub-milliliter) container by centrifugal force whereby the particles are forced through the vertical slits and contact a non-wetted wall surface, andmore » are deflected to the bottom where they are contained for analysis, such as a portable flow cytometer or a portable PCR DNA analysis system.« less
