Title: Measurement of sin(2beta) in Tree-dominated B^0-Decays and Ambiguity Removal

Abstract

The most recent results from the B-factories on the time-dependent CP asymmetries measured in B{sup 0}-decays mediated by b {yields} c{bar c}s quark-transitions are reviewed. The Standard Model interpretation of the results in terms of the parameter sin 2{beta} leads to a four-fold ambiguity on the unitarity triangle {beta} which can be reduced to a two-fold ambiguity by measuring the sign of the parameter cos 2{beta}. The results on cos 2{beta} obtained so far are reviewed.

  • A sample of {approximately} 400 B{sub d}{sup 0}/{bar B}{sub d}{sup 0} {r_arrow} J/{psi}K{sub s}{sup 0} decays collected in {bar p}p collisions by the CDF detector is used to directly measure the CP-violation parameter sin (2{beta}). They find sin(2{beta}) = 0.79{sub {minus}0.44}{sup + 0.41}, favoring the standard model expectation of a large CP violation in this B{sup 0} decay mode.
  • We present new measurements of time-dependent CP-violation parameters in hadronic penguin decays: B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}K{sub L}{sup 0}, K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}, K{sub S}{sup 0}K{sub S}{sup 0}K{sub S}{sup 0}, {omega}K{sub L}{sup 0}, and a radiative penguin decay B{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}{gamma} in a dataset of around 230 {center_dot} 10{sup 6} B{bar B} pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. These CP asymmetry measurements probe for amplitudes beyond the Standard Model in loop-dominated decays of neutral B mesons. While we find a puzzling deviation of CP-asymmetry parameters from predictedmore » values, a full confirmation still awaits more data.« less
  • This study reports the observation of the decays B 0→Dmore » $$*+\atop{s}$$π - and B 0→D (*)-K + in a sample of 230 x 10 6 Y(4S) → B$$\bar{B}$$ events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e +e - storage ring, located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The branching fractions β(B 0 → D$$+\atop{S}$$π -) = (1.3 ± 0.3 (stat) ± 0.2 (syst)) x 10 -5, β(B 0 → D$$+\atop{S}$$K +) = (2.5 ± 0.4 (stat) ± 0.4 (syst)) x 10 -5, β(B 0→D$$*+\atop{s}$$π -) = (2.8 ± 0.6 (stat) ± 0.5 (syst)) x 10 -5, and β(B 0→D (*)-K +) = (2.0 ± 0.5 (stat) ± 0.4 (syst)) x 10 -5 are measured. The significance of the measurements to differ from zero are 5, 9, 6, and 5 standard deviations, respectively. This is a first observation of the decaysB +→D$$*+\atop{s}$$π - and B 0→D (*)-K +. These results may potentially be useful in determining the CP asymmetry parameter sin(2β + γ) in the decays B 0→D$$*+\atop{s}$$π -.« less
