Title: Charm and Charmonium Spectroscopy From B-Factories

Abstract

New and recent results are presented on charm and charmonium spectroscopy from BABAR experiment at SLAC. In particular, measurements on D{sub sJ} states branching fractions have been performed both in B-decays and inclusive e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} c{bar c} interactions. Here a search for D{sub sj}(2632) has been performed and a new D{sub sJ} state at a mass of 2.856 GeV/c{sup 2} has been observed. A search for Y(4260) has been performed in exclusive D{sub D} production from initial-state radiation.

  • Over the past few years, there has been a lot of progress in the areas of charm and charmonium spectroscopy, in large part due to the very large data samples being accumulated at the e{sup +}e{sup -} B-Factories. In this presentation I will focus on results in three areas: the X/Y/Z charmonium-candidate states, the D{sub sJ} charmed-strange mesons, and newly-discovered charmed baryons. Note the absence of a section on pentaquarks: all B-Factory searches for pentaquarks, charmed or otherwise, have not yielded any observation of such states.
  • Since a few years, charm and charmonium spectroscopy has revived, both from experimental and theoretical point of views. Many new states have been discovered triggering numerous theoretical publications. The B-factories with their large enriched charm sample have played a leading role on the experimental side with the observation and study of most of the new states. Other experiments such as CLEO and CDF have also contributed. Classical hadron spectroscopy predicted some of these new states, but not all of them. Therefore a lot of effort have been spent in order to understand the nature of the later. We are summarizingmore » here the most recent and important results in hadron spectroscopy, including strange-charm mesons, charm baryons and charmonium and charmonium-like states.« less
  • A brief review of the excited D{sub s} and D mesons is presented. A precision measurement of the D{sub s1}(2536) mass and width parameters is reported by BABAR. Finally, a recent BABAR study of the D{pi} and D*{pi} final states shows first observations of the radial excitations of the D{sup 0}, D*{sup 0}, and D*{sup +}, as well as the L = 2 excited states of the D{sup 0} and D{sup +}, where L is the orbital angular momentum of the quarks.
  • Since 2003 several states in the charmonium mass region were discovered. While in the conventional c{bar c} spectrum some states are missing, the number of states observed up to now is larger than empty spaces in the c{bar c} spectrum. This, together with other difficulties to explain observed states as a c{bar c} mesons triggered discussions on a possible exotic interpretations. In this proceedings we present current experimental status from B-factories of the so called X, Y and Z states.
