Title: Phase Identification of Seismic Borehole Samples

Abstract

This report documents the phase identification results obtained by x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of samples taken from borehole C4998 drilled at the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) on the Hanford Site (REF). XRD samples were taken from fractures and vesicles or are minerals of interest at areas of interest within the basalt formations cored. The samples were powder mounted and analyzed. Search-match software was used to select the best match from the ICDD mineral database based on peak locations and intensities.

  • The manual and its companion documents (EPA, 1991A; EPA, 1992; EPA, 1993A) are intended to provide guidance to aid dischargers in confirming the cause of toxicity in industrial and municipal effluents. This Phase III confirmation document provides greater detail and more insight into the procedures described in the acute Phase III confirmation document (EPA, 1989D). Procedures to confirm that all toxicants have been correctly identified are given and specific changes for methods applicable to chronic toxicity are included. Extraction of feature vectors used to distinguish the different classes is explained, and the design and training of the neural networks in the system are detailed.   • The Laramie Energy Research Center conducted the Second Hanna in situ coal gasification experiment in 1975 to 76. Sandia Laboratories fielded a significant amount of instrumentation on this test, including temperature, surface resistivity, and seismic arrays, specifically designed to provide diagnostic information as well as to develop remote monitoring methods for eventual use in a process control system. Seismic measurements made during this in situ coal gasification experiment indicate that a borehole-to-borehole procedure using transmission timing-attenuation as well as reflection-timing models is sufficient to characterize the extent of the area affected by gasification. Changes in the times of arrival asmore » well as first peak amplitudes along specific refracted ray paths provide the spatial correlation to the process. In addition, because of the relative placement of source-receiver pairs and the available seismic wavelengths, various reflected and refracted wavefronts overlap, requiring the use of a power spectrum technique based on interference of the phases. With this technique and visual scanning of the records, estimates of reflection times are obtained allowing the determination of a reflecting boundary which can be used to detect the vertical motion of the process. Spatial temperature profiles collected at the same time indicate that these results are consistent and provide the baseline correlation between the process and borehole-to-borehole technique.« less
  • A core hole (C4998) and three boreholes (C4993, C4996, and C4997) were drilled to acquire stratigraphic and downhole seismic data to model potential seismic impacts and to refine design specifications and seismic criteria for the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) under construction on the Hanford Site. Borehole C4993 was completed through the Saddle Mountains Basalt, the upper portion of the Wanapum Basalt, and associated sedimentary interbeds, to provide a continuous record of the rock penetrated by all four holes and to provide access to the subsurface for geophysical measure¬¨ment. Presented and compiled in this report are field-generated records for the deepmore » mud rotary borehole C4993 at the WTP site. Material for C4993 includes borehole logs, lithologic summary, and record of rock chip samples collected during drilling through the months of August through early October. The borehole summary report also includes documentation of the mud rotary drilling, borehole logging, and sample collection.« less
