Title: QT-RESUMMATION FOR POLARIZED SEMI-INCLUSIVE DEEP INELASTIC SCATTERING.

Abstract

We study the transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We consider cross sections for various combinations of the polarizations of the initial lepton and nucleon or the produced hadron, for which we perform the resummation of large double-logarithmic perturbative corrections arising at small transverse momentum. We present phenomenological results for the process ep {yields} e{pi}X for the typical kinematics in the COMPASS experiment. We discuss the impact of the perturbative resummation and of estimated non-perturbative contributions on the corresponding cross sections and their spin asymmetry.

  • A Jefferson Lab experiment proposal was discussed in this talk. The experiment is designed to measure the beam-target double-spin asymmetries A^h_1n in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic {vec}n({vec}e, e' pi^+)X and {vec}n({vec}e, e' pi^-)X reactions on a longitudinally polarized ^3He target. In addition to A^h_1n, the flavor non-singlet combination A[^pi^+][_1n][^-pi^+], in which the gluons do not contribute, will be determined with high precision to extract Delta d[_v](x) independent of the knowledge of the fragmentation functions. The data will also impose strong constraints on quark and gluon polarizations through a global NLO QCD fit.
  • The internal spin structure of the proton was studied in a deep-inelastic scattering experiment a CERN, the European Laboratory for Nuclear Research, by the European Muon Collaboration, using a longitudinally polarized muon beam and a longitudinally polarized target at irradiated ammonia. The spin asymmetry was studied as a function of the Bjorken scaling variable x and the results were in agreement over the region of overlap with previous experiments that used lower-energy polarized electron beams. The higher energies of the experiment allowed to study with precision the previously unexplored region of x below 0.1 and to compute the integral ofmore » the spin-dependent structure function g{sub 1} of the proton. This integral was found to be in disagreement with the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule which could imply either a breakdown of the SU(3) symmetry in the decays of the members of the baryon octet or a significant polarization of the strange-quark sea of the proton opposite to the proton spin. In either case and assuming the validity of the Bjorken sum rule that relates the integrals of the spin-dependent structure functions of the proton and the neutron, the total helicity of all the quarks is found to account for only a small fraction of the proton helicity. In addition, spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive reactions where a hadron of definite sign is observed in the final state were studied. The results are consistent with the down quarks being polarized opposite to the proton spin, as expected by symmetry arguments. Implication of the results on different areas in particle physics are presented. Some future prospects for spin physics are discussed and predictions are given for deep-inelastic-scattering experiments on polarized deuterium targets and the spin structure of the neutron.« less
  • Spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive cross sections for the production of positively and negatively charged hadrons have been measured in deep-inelastic scattering of polarized positrons on polarized hydrogen and {sup 3}He targets, in the kinematic range 0.023<x<0.6 and 1 GeV{sup 2}<Q{sup 2}<10 GeV{sup 2}. Polarized quark distributions are extracted as a function of x for up (u + {ovr u}) and down (d + {ovr d} ) flavors. The up quark polarization is positive and the down quark polarization is negative in the measured range. The polarization of the sea is compatible with zero. The first moments of the polarized quarkmore » distributions are presented. The isospin non-singlet combination {Delta}q{sub 3} is consistent with the prediction based on the Bjorken sum rule. The moments of the polarized quark distributions are compared to predictions based on SU(3){sub f} flavor symmetry and to a prediction from lattice QCD.« less

  • We have measured semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for positively and negatively charged hadrons from polarized protons and deuterons and we have determined the polarized quark distributions {Delta}u{sub v}(x), {Delta}d{sub v}(x) and {Delta}{bar q}(x) of the valence and the non-strange sea quarks. Our results for the first moments of the polarized valence quark distributions are in good agreement with results obtained from the axial matrix elements {ital F} and {ital D}.
