A search for {sup 160}Gd double beta decay using GSO scintillators
- Institute of Single Crystals, Kharkov (Ukraine)
- Institute for Nuclear Research, Kiev (Ukraine)
The backgrounds of GSO(Tb) and GSO(Ce) scintillators are measured in the Solotvina underground laboratory. Bounds on the content of {sup 40}K, {sup 60}Co, {sup 90}Sr, {sup 137}Cs, {sup 147}Sm, {sup 226}Ra, {sup 232}Th, {sup 235}U, and {sup 238}U in these crystals are determined. Limits on the {sup 160}Gd half-life with respect to double beta decay to the ground state and to the first excited level of {sup 160}Dy are found for the first time. In particular, the constraints T{sub 1/2}(2{nu}2{beta}) {ge} 1.3 x 10{sup 17} yr (99% CL), T{sub 1/2}(0{nu}2{beta}) {ge} 1.4 x 10{sup 19} yr (90% CL), and T{sub 1/2}(0{nu}M2{beta}) {ge} 2.7 x 10{sup 17} yr (99% CL) are obtained for O{sup +} {yields} O{sup +}. 22 refs., 4 figs., 2 tabs.
