  • Collaborative development and operation of large physics experiments is fairly common. Less common is the collaborative development or operation of accelerators. A current example of the latter is the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The SNS project was conceived as a collaborative effort between six DOE facilities. In the SNS case, the control system was also developed collaboratively. The SNS project has now moved beyond the collaborative development phase and into the phase where Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) is integrating contributions from collaborating ''partner labs'' and is beginning accelerator operations.   • Regional-scale assessment of the effects of ozone on forest ecosystems involves a diffuse array of sources distributed across tens of thousands of square kilometers. Exposure characteristics have short-term dynamics (hours or days), but effects may be manifest only after years of exposure. Discussion of the adequacy of forestry data for assessing the impact of ozone on forests from the national perspective requires first a discussion of the process by which such an assessment might be done, and secondly, discussion of the other types of data necessary to permit differentiation of forest impacts. This paper addresses a variety of approaches tomore » assessment of forest impacts, discusses the basic data requirements necessary for an assessment of ozone impacts on forests, and provides an assessment of data availability on a national scale. 24 refs., 4 figs.« less

  • We discuss our technosocial analytics research and devel-opment on predicting and assessing the impact of climate change on U.S. power-grids and the wider implications for national security. The ongoing efforts extend cutting-edge modeling theories derived from climate, energy, social sciences, and national security domains to form a unified system coupled with an interactive visual interface for technosocial analysis. The goal of the system is to create viable future scenarios that address both technical and social factors involved in the model domains. These scenarios enable policy makers to formulate a coherent, unified strategy towards building a safe and secure society.
