Title: An Accelerator Neutron Source for BNCT

Abstract

The overall goal of this project was to develop an accelerator-based neutron source (ABNS) for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). Specifically, our goals were to design, and confirm by measurement, a target assembly and a moderator assembly that would fulfill the design requirements of the ABNS. These design requirements were 1) that the neutron field quality be as good as the neutron field quality for the reactor-based neutron sources for BNCT, 2) that the patient treatment time be reasonable, 3) that the proton current required to treat patients in reasonable times be technologially achievable at reasonable cost with good reliability, and accelerator space requirements which can be met in a hospital, and finally 4) that the treatment be safe for the patients.

  • The objectives of this proposal are twofold. One objective is to design and test (using the OSU Van de Graaff accelerator) a moderator assembly for a thermal neutron source for the treatment of superficial tumors by Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). We will identify the current of 2.5 MeV protons which is necessary to treat a patient in less than one hour. Our second objective is to design and thermally test a target for our thermal and epithermal source of neutrons for BNCT.   • This is the progress report and proposed research objectives for the project entitled An Accelerator Neutron Source for BNCT.'' The progress report is for the time period from July 15, 1990 to date. The proposal is for the upcoming budget period from July 15, 1991 to July 14, 1992. The objectives of this project are to design and test the target assembly and the moderator assembly for accelerator based thermal and epithermal neutron sources for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy.
