  • There is growing interest in the generation and characterization of femtosecond and subfemtosecond pulses from linac-based free-electron lasers (FELs). In this report, following the method of Ricci and Smith [Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 3, 032801 (2000)], we investigate the measurement of the longitudinal bunch profile of an ultrashort electron bunch produced by these FELs. We show that this method can be applied in a straightforward manner at x-ray FEL facilities such as the Linac Coherent Light Source by slightly adjusting the second bunch compressor followed by running the bunch on an rf zero-crossing phase of the final linac. Wemore » find that the linac wakefield strongly perturbs the measurement, and through analysis show that it can be compensated in a simple way. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method and wakefield compensation through numerical simulations, including effects of coherent synchrotron radiation and longitudinal space charge. When used in conjunction with a high-resolution electron spectrometer, this method potentially reveals the temporal profile of the electron beam down to the femtosecond and subfemotsecond scale.« less
  • An autocorrelation method is proposed to measure the bunch length at the TESLA Test Facility linac. The coherent part of the spectrum of transition radiation is to be examined using a quasioptical setup and a Golay Cell (1).   • For SASE, a bunch compression and a beam transport system which follow the layout of the present SPring-8 linac are designed. This is the first order evaluation trying to preserve the emittances at an RF photocathode gun. There are two bunch compressors in the injector section. There are one energy compressor, 90 deg. bending system and two bunch compressors in the final compression section. The RF gun generates electron beam which has the normalized transverse emittances of 1.5{pi}mm{center_dot}mrad, and the longitudinal emittance of 0.16{pi}ps{center_dot}MeV. The final emittances before a undulator become 3.5{pi}mm{center_dot}mrad for x direction and 0.38{pi}ps{center_dot}MeV respectively.
