Title: BaBar Results on E+ E- ---> P Anti-P By Means of ISR

Abstract

BaBar has measured with unprecedented accuracy the e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} p{bar p} cross section from the threshold up to Q{sub p{bar p}}{sup 2} {approx} 20 GeV{sup 2}/c{sup 4}, finding out an unexpected cross section, with plateaux and negative steps. Evidence for a ratio |G{sub E}/G{sub M}| > 1 has also been found as well as a sudden variation in |G{sub M}| just above the threshold.

  • In December 1982 much more p anti p data at ..sqrt..s = 53 GeV were accumulated at the CERN ISR than during the run in October 1981. Preliminary results are presented both for a single particle trigger and for a total electromagnetic energy trigger. No significant differences between p anti p and pp interactions were observed.

  • We present a review of BaBar results on e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} hadrons using the initial state radiation technique. Cross sections over the {radical}s range from threshold to 4-5 GeV, with very small point-to-point systematic errors, are presented for the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}, 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}), 2(K{sup +}K{sup -}), 3({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}), 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -})2{pi}{sup 0}, 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -})K{sup +}K{sup -}, and p{bar p} final states. The preliminary results of e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} and e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} cross sections are also presented.
  • A precision measurement of the cross section for the process e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}({gamma}) is presented with the radiative return method with the high statistics data accumulated by BaBar at the {Upsilon}(4S). The luminosity is determined from the study of the corresponding leptonic process e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}({gamma}), thus cancelling several factors and reducing the overall systematic uncertainty. Trigger, tracking, particle identification, and kinematic-fit {chi}{sup 2} efficiencies are evaluated from data in the same environment. Additional radiation from the initial and the final states is studied in both processes. The analysis covers the massmore » range between threshold and 5 GeV. Preliminary results are presented here between 0.5 and 3 GeV, with data samples of 513183 pion events and 445631 muon events. The systematic uncertainty in the main {rho} resonance region is 5.6 x 10{sup -3}. The measured mass dependent pion-pair cross section is compared with measurements from earlier experiments and used to compute the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution from the dominant {pi}{pi} channel to the muon magnetic anomaly.« less
