Phosphonium resins were found to be more nitrate selective and have higher capacities than ammonium resins. A mixed bed process, where nitrate removal and water softening is accomplished in a single column, was also evaluated. New anion exchange resins, with superior selectivity for nitrate, have been developed. The resins are based on the covalent attachment of a quaternary phosphonium group to a polystyrene-divinylbenzene copolymer. Phosphonium resins of composition resin-R{sub 3}P{sup +}A{sup {minus}} where R is varied from methyl to pentyl were evaluated for nitrate/sulfate selectivity, capacity and nitrate decontamination of drinking water. Potential problems associated with ion-exchange resins used in the decontamination of light-water reactor systems

During a typical decontamination event, ion-exchange resin beds are used to remove corrosion products (radioactive and nonradioactive) and excess decontamination reagents from waste streams. The spent resins may be solidified in a binder, such as cement, or sealed in a high-integrity container (HIC) in order to meet waste stability requirements specified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Lack of stability of low-level waste in a shallow land burial trench may lead to trench subsidence, enhanced water infiltration and waste leaching, which would result in accelerated transport of radionuclides and the complexing agents used for decontamination. A PHENOLIC RESIN ION EXCHANGE PROCESS FOR DECONTAMINATING LOW-RADIOACTIVITY- LEVEL PROCESS WATER WASTES

A process was developed on a laboratory scale to decontaminate large volumes of low-radioactivity-level process water wastes having a macrochemical composition not very different from tap water but containing more than the maximum permissible concentration of radioisotopes for unrestricted discharge. The water is adjusted to 0.01 M NaOH (pH slightly under 12), clarified to remove the small amount of solids, and passed through a bed of phenolic cation exchange resin.
