Title: High power microwave generator

Abstract

A microwave generator efficiently converts the energy of an intense relativistic electron beam (REB) into a high-power microwave emission using the Smith-Purcell effect which is related to Cerenkov radiation. Feedback for efficient beam bunching and high gain is obtained by placing a cylindrical Smith-Purcell transmission grating on the axis of a toroidal resonator. High efficiency results from the use of a thin cold annular highly-magnetized REB that is closely coupled to the resonant structure.

  • A device, that operates in a vacuum of about 10/sup -5/Torr or less, for producing high-powered and coherent microwaves is described comprising: a cylindrical and hollow real cathode, of radius r/sub c/, for field emitting relativistic electrons in a generally inward radial direction; a cylindrical and substantially electron-transparent anode, of radius r/sub a/, internally and co-axially disposed within the cylindrical real cathode; a cylindrical electron collector electrode; means for rapidly driving the cylindrical anode to a positive potential.
  • A device (10) for producing high-powered and coherent microwaves is described. The device comprises an evacuated, cylindrical, and hollow real cathode (20) that is driven to inwardly field emit relativistic electrons. The electrons pass through an internally disposed cylindrical and substantially electron-transparent cylindrical anode (24), proceed toward a cylindrical electron collector electrode (26), and form a cylindrical virtual cathode (32). Microwaves are produced by spatial and temporal oscillations of the cylindrical virtual cathode (32), and by electrons that reflex back and forth between the cylindrical virtual cathode (32) and the cylindrical real cathode (20).
  • A microwave generator is described which consists of: a relativistic electron beam; cylindrical grating means axially centered on the relativistic electron beam and closely coupled thereto, the cylindrical grating means for converting by the Smith-Purcell effect energy from the relativistic electron beam into microwave energy; and quasi-optical toroidal resonator means having the cylindrical grating means positioned on the axis thereof; the quasi-optical means for inducing beam bunching in the relativistic electron beam and for increasing energy conversion gain.
