Abstract

The major objective of this program is to upgrade and replace instruments and equipment that significantly improve the performance, control and operational capability of the Purdue University nuclear reactor (PUR-1). Under this major objective one project on design and installation of interface cards for channel four detector was considered. This report is the final report and gives the efforts and progress achieved on these projects from August 2002 to July 2004.

The first one was to convert the vacuum tube control and safety amplifiers (CSA) to solid state electronics, and the other was to upgrade the electrical and electronic shielding. Progress report on the conversion of the Purdue University reactor, PUR-1, from HEU to LEU

The effort for the conversion of the Purdue University Research Reactor, PUR-1, began in August, 2005, and will be completed in late 2007. Initial low-enriched uranium (LEU) assemblies will be inserted into the core in September, and the final core load is expected to be completed by October 2007. This paper summarizes the work performed to date, and the expectations for the work remaining to complete the project. PUR-1 Water Processing and Cooling System Upgrade

The project objective was to purchase equipment related to the safety and operational capability of PUR-1. Following a 10x power uprate and the return to an active operational cycle, a water process system replacement is required to maintain the bulk coolant temperature within the bounds of the Technical Specification limit at the PUR-1. This Phase II research project was focused on constructing and testing a facility for the measurement of the structure of hot solid and liquid materials under extreme conditions using neutron diffraction. The work resulted in measurements at temperatures of 3300 K, the highest ever performed in a neutron beam. Work was performed jointly by Containerless Research, Inc. and Argonne National Laboratory with significant interactions with engineers and scientists at the under construction-SNS facility in Oak Ridge, TN.
