Estimating woody biomass in sub-saharan Africa; Evaluation de la biomasse ligneuse en afrique subsaharienne
This is the first report of a multifaceted project launched in 1988 to supplement the inadequate data on the amount of woody biomass available for use as fuel in Sub-Saharan Africa. Woodfuels are the primary source of fuel for most households, as well as an important source of energy for small industries such as tobacco curing, tea drying, fish smoking, beer brewing, brickmaking, and commercial baking. Development and conservation of woody biomass has become increasingly important because of perceived shortages of woodfuels. Lack of adequate data has made it difficult, however, for many countries to include such development and conservation plans in their overall energy strategies. The study represents a first attempt to analyze the stock and sustainable yield of woody biomass in the subcontinent. Satellite images, field data, and other sources are used to create definitive maps and detailed descriptions of 43 classes of land cover. The report includes over a hundred tables and figures and four full-color foldout land cover maps.
