UTSI/CFFF MHD PROGRAM COMPLETION AND RELATED ACTIVITY
Abstract
Maintenance work on the DOE CFFF facility and other related government property is no longer authorized under this contract in accordance with the DOE-UT Settlement Agreement. Environmental remediation preservation of the facility continued. Government property has been transferred to UTSI as owner which frees up many items for proper disposal. Actions are underway to dispose of other wastes, and control pests and water at the DOE CFFF. Groundwater remediation activities as mandated by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) continued throughout the quarter. A contract was awarded to an environmental consulting company to drill and sample three additional groundwater wells adjacent to the CFFF property. A report on this activity, with results of the sample analysis, has been sent to the TDEC.

Maintenance of the DOE CFFF facility was suspended, due to a stop work order issued in September 1998. Property accounting actions were continued on a minimum basis with university funding. No work was done on the environmental management and environmental restoration for the facility. Continued progress is reported on the five (5) high temperature superconductivity projects under Task 6. A cooperative group has been formed to facilitate the development of chemical processes for the manufacture of HTS superconductor wire. The group includes EURUS Technologies, Incorporated, Sandia National Laboratory, Clemson University, University of Houston and the National Magnet Laboratory. The acmore »

UTSI/CFFF MHD PROGRAM COMPLETION AND RELATED ACTIVITY
Routine preventive maintenance of the DOE Coal Fired Flow Facility (CFFF) is being performed. Modernization programs, funded under subcontract from Foster Wheeler Development Corporation by the DOE HIPPS Program, have been completed on the coal processing system, the data acquisition and control system and the control room. Environmental restoration actions continued with monitoring of groundwater wells and holding pond effluent. Progress is reported on the approved groundwater remediation plan. Actions are underway to dispose of spent seed/ash mixtures and excess coal remaining from the MHD POC program. The status of five (5) High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) projects is reported. -
UTSI/CFFF MHD program completion and related activity. Technical progress report, September 1, 1995--December 31, 1995
The DOE Coal Fired Flow Facility (CFFF) is being maintained in a standby condition. In addition to routine preventative maintenance, a 1,000 MVA transformer failure occurred and repair actions are under consideration. Analyses and reporting in key areas of the MHD POC program continued. One topical report was completed during the quarter and three more plus a summary report for the Western coal tests are nearing completion. In addition, the data and test documentation from the over 3,000 hours of MHD testing on coal is in storage awaiting DOE instructions on location and format for archiving. Environmental activities include bothmore » -
UTSI/CFFF MHD program completion and related activity. Technical progress report, April 1, 1996--June 30, 1996
Actions taken to maintain the DOE Coal Fired Flow Facility in standby condition are reported. Plans are discussed to upgrade the facility coal processing system and data acquisition and control system with funds from another DOE program (HIPPS). Major actions in site environmental remediation were continuation of sampling and analysis from the 8 groundwater wells and completion of drilling of another 7 wells. Drilling methodology and soil sampling techniques are described. Work on the plan for development of coated conductors continued. -
