  • From a series of high resolution supercomputer calculations, new paradigms emerge for black hole accretion with angular momentum. We have discovered that the centrifugal barrier, or funnel wall, plays a key role in shock heating the inflowing supersonic fluid, producing a stationary thick disk with bipolar outflow. The infall dynamics are calculated in detail and followed until a steady state is reached. We delineate a number of distinct regimes of steady state flow in the two parameter solution space defined by the fluid's angular momentum and the disk thickness. The essential physics is highlighted with selected numerical examples. The samemore » code can calculate general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical flows near black holes.« less
  • An historical look at software systems reveals a progression of thinking about protection and risk management. In this paper, three generations are defined. For each, we examine the prevalent views of risk, risk assessment, and risk mitigation. We also examine prevalent strategies for assurance. Many gaps exist in current knowledge of how to manage and assess risks in software systems. This paper presents a new perspective which enables comprehensive risk-based design and evaluation of systems, spanning a range of surety concerns (including correctness and safety, in addition to traditional security concerns), and addressing multiple system aspects. We believe this tomore » be a new and unique multidisciplinary approach which transcends both traditional security approaches and traditional risk analysis methods. It facilitates a risk analysis completely tailored to the system at hand, instantiating its threats, its barriers, and its needs for risk reduction.« less
  • This paper is a presentation made in support of the statistics profession. This field can say it has had a major impact in most major fields of study presently undertaken by man, yet it is not perceived as an important, or critical field of study. It is not a growth field either, witness the almost level number of faculty and new PhD`s produced over the past twenty years. The author argues the profession must do a better job of selling itself to the students it educates.
