A study of communications for the seismic data collection network. Final report, 1 Aug 1974--30 Jun 75
Abstract
Results of studies performed to support the implementation of a worldwide seismic data collection network using a mix of ARPA Network and leased line communications are presented. Host level protocols for the ARPA Network links are specified. An analysis of the traffic generated by the seismic data subnet identified potential limits imposed by the bandwidth and buffer capacity at two nodes of the network. Operational monitoring and diagnostic procedures are recommended. A backup plan for the system design is developed in case error rates in local communications to the seismic stations are excessive. Design specifications for the Seismic Private Line Interface computer for interfacing existing seismic station controllers to the ARPA Network are included as an appendix.
