Synthesis and crystal chemistry of magnetic solid solution La/sub x/Ho/sub 1-x/B/sub 6/ (in French)

La/sub x/Ho/sub 1-x/B/sub 6/ solid solutions of CaB/sub 6/ type have been prepared by borothermal reduction in the range 0.2 less than or equal x less than 1. For La/(Ho + La) less than 0.2 the corresponding solid solution coexists with a HoB/sub 4/ and HoB/sub 12/ mixture. HoB/sub 6/ could not be obtained: the ionic radius of Ho/sup 3 +/ seems to be a border value for the stability of the CaB/sub 6/ structure. Extrapolation of the magnetic properties of La/sub x/Ho/sub 1-x/B/sub 6/ solid solutions allows to confer to an eventual HoB/sub 6/ an interaction mechanism of the RKKY type.
