Title: Low-frequency electromagnetic radiation of pulsars in the interstellar medium

The low-frequency electromagnetic (''whistler'') radiation of pulsars is discussed in terms of the effect upon it of the ionized magnetoactive gas in the ambient interstellar medium. The radiation source is modeled by an oblique magnetic rotator. Equations are derived for the total power of this spiral-wave radiation generated by pulsars in the interstellar gas. The dependence of the radiative power loss on the rotation frequency is established for magnetic dipoles and quadrupoles. Measurements of the deceleration parameters for the rotation of the Crab Nebula pulsar can be explained by assuming that it emits magnetic-quadrupole radiation. (AIP)
