Upper limit for the presence of superheavy elements in monazite from Madagascar

Elastic scattering of 12-MeV /sup 7/Li ions from targets made from Madagascar monazite shows no evidence for the presence of superheavy elements. Upper limits on fractional atomic abundances are 3 x 10/sup -6/ for eka-thorium and 6 x 10/sup -8/ for eka-lead.
