Abstract

Female rats were exposed to cadmium by multiple intramuscular injections of 250 ..mu..g CaCl/sub 2/ for 54 days. Activity and haircoat were affected, sores on the sites of injection and persistent diestrus were observed in the treated rats. Morphological examination of organs revealed a smaller weight and size in reproductive organs and pituitary, but enlargement of liver, spleen, and kidney. The resistance to cadmium toxicity in female rats may be due to the elevated hepatic enzymatic demethylation activity.

Secretogranin II (SgII) is a protein of pituitary secretory granules released by LHRH-stimulated gonadotrope cells. Estrogens and androgens are modulators of SgII release. Studies of the acute toxicity of TNT to aquatic organisms indicate that LC/sub 50/ values range from 5.2 to 27.0 mg/L for invertebrates in 48-hr static tests, and from 2.0 to 3.7 mg/L for fish in 96-hr flow-through tests. TNT is absorbed by both humans and test animals through the skin, by ingestion, and by inhalation. Dahl hypertension-resistant (R) and hypertension-sensitive (S) rats, with opposite genetically controlled propensities for hypertension, were used to determine if cadmium-induced hypertension was also dependent upon genetic predisposition. When intraperitoneal injections of cadmium (1 and 2 mg/kg) were given to male and female R and S rats maintained under ordinary laboratory conditions, female S rats manifested a significant increase in blood pressure which persisted for 16 weeks, whereas the R rats and the male S rats showed no significant changes in blood pressure. Background: Doxorubicin (DOX), an anthracycline therapeutic, is widely used to treat a variety of cancer types and known to induce cardiomyopathy in a time and dose-dependent manner. Postmenopausal and hypertensive females are two high-risk groups for developing adverse effects following DOX treatment. This may suggest that endogenous reproductive hormones can in part suppress DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. Female rats were divided into four groups of five rats each including one control group (C). The animals were administered Na/sub 2/SeO/sub 3/ (Se), (CdCl/sub 2/Cd), and Na/sub 2/SeO/sub 3/ + CdCl/sub 2/ (Cd +Se).
