It is shown that the width of the 128, 206, 357, 466, 696, and 1159 cm/sup -1/ Raman lines of ..cap alpha..-quartz increases both on irradiating the quartz with fast neutrons and also on heating the crystals. For the 206 cm/sup -1/ line the temperature and radiation dependences of the linewidth are very similar; for the 128, 357, 466, and 1159 cm/sup -1/ lines radiation leads to a greater broadening than heating to the temperature corresponding to the flux in question. The greater broadening of the Raman spectral lines of quartz on irradiation with fast neutrons is attributed to amorphization. A comparison between the behavior of the 128, 206, and 466 cm/sup -1/ line intensities after reactor irradiation and heating the crystals shows that the change in the 206 cm/sup -1/ line intensity due to irradiation is analogous to that due to temperature, whereas anomalous behavior is encountered in the case of the 128 and 466 cm/sup -1/ lines. In order to explain the radiation dependence of the 128, 206, and 466 cm/sup -1/ lines (and the temperature dependence of the 206 cm/sup -1/ line), it is sufficient to allow for the anharmonicity of the lattice vibrations of the irradiated crystals, due to the formation of radiation defects.
