Ion beam--plasma interaction at right angles to the external magnetic field

Lower hybrid wave instability caused by the interaction between a plasma and an ion beam perpendicular to an external magnetic field is studied both theoretically and experimentally. A homogeneous magnetized plasma with large volume and an ion beam source with large cross section 20 cm x 100 cm have been constructed for this purpose. Observations of the wave propagation and the relaxation of the ion beam distribution are reported. The effect of the magnetic field which deforms the distribution into a stable form is discussed.
