Thermochemical hydrogen production. Annual report, January-December 1978
New chemical cycle derivation and preliminary laboratory workability experiments conducted under the 1978 program of research of thermochemical production of hydrogen are reported here. The program included study of solar primary heat sources that could supply heat at higher temperatures than high-temperature nuclear fission heat sources. Eleven new high-temperature, solar-driven members of the metal-metal oxide and metal oxide-metal sulfate classes of cycles were derived. Performance and capital cost data for a wide range of solar primary heat sources were tabulated. The capital costs were at least three times greater than those for high-temperature nuclear designs, on a cost per thermal capacity basis.
