Determination of impurities of gadolinium and terbium in scandium oxide. [X-ray excited fluorescence spectra in ScPO/sub 4/ phosphors]

Gd and Tb were determined in Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/ by x-ray excitation of fluorescence spectra in the region of 309 to 318 nm (Gd) and 370 to 395 nm (Tb) in crystal phosphors. Fluorescence spectra were obtained with phosphors based on ScPO/sub 4/. Proportionality between the fluorescence intensity and content of the element was maintained up to 100 ..mu..g in 50 mg Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and the minimum detectable content was 0.025 ..mu..g Gd and 0.125 ..mu..g Tb in a 50-mg sample of Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/. The coefficient of variation of the method was approximately 5 to 9 percent. (BLM)
