It has been advocated that the CEA assay be utilized for mass screening to detect patients with malignancy. The value of such screening is in doubt, but we have found the CEA assay to be of definite value as an adjunct to certain conventional diagnostic examinations: (1) Used in conjunction with the radiologic colon examination, it improves the detection rate for colonic malignancy. (2) Used in conjunction with liver scanning, it improves the detection rate for liver metastases, and (3) Used in conjunction with bronchial brushing assay of bronchial washings for CEA improves the detection rate for lung malignancy.
