The use of fusion reactors to transmute fission reactor wastes to stable species is an attractive concept. In this paper, the feasibility of transmutation of the long-lived actinide radioactive waste Np-237 with a fusion reactor and a hybrid reactor has been investigated. Liner fusion systems were studied in order to evaluate their potential for the transmutation of selected fission wastes. The transmutation goals selected allow one generation (50 y) to reduce the radiological hazard to the order of the natural ore from which it was produced. Two plasma configurations were considered: a field-reversed theta-pinch and an open field-line wall-confined linear plasma. Only thick liquid waste-containing liners were considered. Limitations of the fission fuel resources will presumably mandate the replacement of thermal fission reactors by fast fission reactors that operate on a self-sufficient closed fuel cycle. This replacement might take place within the next one hundred years, so the direct competitors of fusion reactors will be fission reactors of the latter rather than the former type.
