Title: New system tames oil flyash

A recirculating sluice system designed to remove oil flyash from electrostatic precipitators, avoiding plugging and solids carryover, is described. Tests of the system showed that suspended solids were consistently held to less than 1 percent. Dissolved solids in the tests generally increased until about the 100th day, when the system was drained and cleaned for repairs. The secondary-underflow's suspended-solids concentration ranged between 4 and 13 percent during the test period. Secondary-underflow volume was 500 to 1000 gpd. An initial problem was extensive corrosion of the wet-bottom pans, first-stage tank, and other metal portions of the system, caused by the acidic solution formed by salt water and oil flyash. The corrosion has been controlled by using fresh water instead of salt water, and by adjusting the recirculating-fluid's pH with caustic. The full-scale system has achieved the design objectives of maintaining a dilute recirculating fluid, along with a concentrated waste stream. (RCK)
