Characterization of oil spills by capillary column gas chromatography

The gas chromatographic procedure presented in this paper has been effectively used to identify hydrocarbon oil spills. The spill samples are analyzed on a 100-ft Dexsil-300 Support Coated Open Tube column to obtain maximum resolution yet retain a high upper temperature limit. The chromatograms are mathematically treated to give ''GC patterns''that are a characteristic of the oil, yet are essentially unaffected by moderate weathering. Both liquid and solid oil spill samples were analyzed with very little sample preparation in less than 2 h. Chromatograms of crude oils, bunker fuels, and oil spills and their respective ''GC patterns'' are reported.
