Hydrogen storage preparation of the hydride phase Ti/sub 2/Fe/sub x/M/sub 1-x/H/sub 4/. Annual summary report, June 1, 1975--May 31, 1976

The following conclusions were reached. A phase forms from fine grained alloys in the vicinity of the stoichiometry, Ti/sub 2/Fe, which indexes as cubic with an 11.30 +- 0.01 Angstrom cell edge. A phase can be formed close to the Ti/sub 2/Fe stoichiometry by addition of a third element, and that phase will react with hydrogen. The Engel-Brewer correlation successfully predicted the composition, Ti/sub 2/X-II-4, which formed in the E9/sub 3/ structure. The application of the Engel-Brewer correlation to the FeTi model has suggested that the reaction of hydrogen with FeTi is governed by the effects of the interaction of hydrogen with the electronic structure of the alloy.
