A physically based micromechanical model is applied to study finite compressive deformation and failure in lamellar TiAl microstructures. Orientation dependent yielding of lamellar TiAl single crystals is specifically modeled. Finite element computations show that deformation is inherently non-uniform in the lamellar microstructure. Intergranular fracture (at low strains) and internal buckling (at high strains) are found to be two of the most important failure modes.
