Fossil fuel biomarkers
In the past few years, biomarkers have been used extensively in geochemical research. Identification of these compounds is normally made by mass spectrometry. However only a limited number of authentic biomarkers have been synthesized for comparative purposes. This is a collection of biomarker spectra. The book comprises two parts: the first discusses the origins of various classes of biomarkers and how they can be applied to petroleum exploration problems. A number of examples of distributions from different types of crude oils and source rocks are provided, plus a summary of all the biomarker parameters used in exploration studies. The second and main part of the book contains almost 400 biomarker mass spectra, collected from a wide range of scientific journals. Many of the spectra are of authentic compounds, others are based on interpretation of spectral data. Each spectrum is accompanied by a summary of data including acquisition conditions, biomarker origin, and authenticity of the data.
