Diffuse reflection and Raman spectroscopy have been used in studying aluminanickel-molybdenum oxide catalysts and the products obtained in selective separation of their components by extraction with water and aqua ammonia. It has been shown that water extraction of the catalysts dissolves the bulk particles of polymolybdenum compounds that are localized in the microvoids of the support, and this dissolution is accompanied by breakdown of the Al-Ni-Mo surface compounds, while the oxide monolayer of Mo on the support surface and the nickel inserted into the near-surface layers of ..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ are retained. Extraction with aqua amomonia destroys the Mo monolayer.
