Energy information in the Federal Government. A directory of energy sources identified by the Interagency Task Force on Energy Information
The Federal Energy Information Locator System (FEILS), which contains information on most of the sources of energy data in the Federal Government, is described and illustrated in this directory. FEILS is the beginning of a comprehensive inventory of existing data sources; eventually FEILS will include all government energy data sources. Using this Directory, Federal agencies collecting specific kinds of energy data can be identified rapidly. The following information on the energy data sources are included in FEILS: the energy source for which data is collected (e.g., coal, natural gas); major functions associated with that energy source (e.g., exploration, reserves, or extraction); more refined characteristics associated with specific energy data sources, such as geographical location, bed thickness of anthracite coal reserves; identification and description of 44 separate Federal agencies, bureaus, and administrations associated with 261 different programs; and program summaries identifying 200 data collection forms, 600 publications, and 98 computerized data bases or major files. The National Energy Information Center of the Federal Energy Administration will have the responsibility of maintaining and enhancing FEILS. An updated Directory will be published annually. (BYB)
