Title: How factoring in humidity adds value

Abstract

Humidity plays a major role in health, comfort, and production. This article is a brief overview of the technologies available and a detailed explanation of how to calculate humidification loads. The problems caused by dry air vary from one building to another and from one area to another. But basically, there are three major problem types: static electricity, poor moisture stability, health and comfort problems. In today's business offices, static electricity can disrupt operations and increase operating costs. In printing facilities, low humidity causes poor ink registration. Also, sheets of paper stick together and jam machines, wasting time and paper. In computer rooms and data processing areas, dry air leads to static electric discharges that cause circuit board failure, dust buildup on heads, and storage tape breakage. Moisture stability impacts industrial processes and the materials they use. In many cases, product and material deterioration is directly related to moisture fluctuations and lack of humidity control. Books, antiques, paper, wood and wood products, and fruits and vegetables are a few items that can be ruined by low or changing humidity. The health impact of low humidity shows up in dry nasal and thread membranes, dry and itchy skin, and irritated eyes.more » For employees, this means greater susceptibility to colds and other viral infections. The results is higher absenteeism when humidity is low, which translates into lost productivity and profits.« less

  • As with any rejuvenation scheme, the first step is always identification and evaluation of potential producible reserves. But economic and physical factors made evaluation using traditional logging techniques problematic. The constraints that inhibited earlier logging tools have been addressed by a new, compact integrated system called Platform Express (PEX). Oil companies operating in two of the most mature producing regions of the US, the Hugoton-Panhandle Field and the Southwest Nena Lucia Field in West Texas, discuss the physical and economic advantages they are reaping using PEX technologies. Hugoton-Panhandle Field, discovered around 1920, sprawls across parts of three south-central states andmore » has been one of the world`s largest gas producers. Despite continuing pressure declines in this aging gas giant, the entire region has undergone restoration in the last few years. In its Kansas portions, a modest oil production has almost doubled since 1990 and a steep gas decline has been completely turned around. These production gains have come from an active program of recompletions, the deepening of old holes and new drilling. The story in the southwest Nena Lucia Field is much the same. Operator Oryx Energy has been active in the field, located west of Abilene, Texas, since its discovery in the 1950s. The goal with this field is to use advanced technologies to reverse the production declines that began years ago. Such a reversal began in mid-1996 and has been sustained thus far.« less
  • It is estimated that $27 billion dollars was lost as a result of power mishaps during 1996. Within the industry, there is little agreement on the effect that electric power industry restructuring will have on the future reliability and quality of the system. However, many engineering experts are concerned that the number of mishaps will increase as the electric power industry becomes more competitive because (1) power will travel over longer distances to reach the customer, (2) increased system impedance will make it more susceptible to sags from faults, (3) power suppliers will have less incentive to resolve system problemsmore » cooperatively, (4) price cutting pressures will result in decreased system maintenance and (5) more breakdowns will result from antiquated, and ill-maintained, end-user equipment. The 1996 western states outages prompted an immediate focus on reliability issues. Moreover, power suppliers and end-users are beginning to become more aware of the serious legal implications posed by problems in power reliability and quality, as the traditional utility gross negligence liability standards begin to be replaced by breach of contract, negligence and, perhaps, strict liability standards. This has resulted in new interest in power reliability and quality in power contract negotiations, loss control and maintenance, and reviews and audits of insurance requirements.« less
  • This article, the first of a series of 3 articles, explores the subject of gas heating value in detail and explains terms and methods which have been widely accepted, but not so widely understood. Included in the article are the different ways heating value can be measured, calculated, and reported, and the restrictions imposed by its specifications. The terms defined in the article include btu, heating values, gross heating value, net heating value, standard volume, and standard conditions of temperature, pressure, and water saturation. Descriptions are given of equipment being used for the measurement of heating value, including the water-cooledmore » calorimeter and the air-cooled calorimeter. In calculating the heating value of a gaseous mixture, the following factors are involved: (1) proportion of each component in the gas; (2) base heating value of each component; (3) adjustment of pressure base; (4) adjustment for water saturation; and (5) adjustment for volume deviation.
