Magnetic properties of solid solutions in the systems TiN--CrN and VN--CrN
The compositions Ti/sub 0/./sub 05/Cr/sub 0/./sub 95/N and Ti/sub 0/./sub 11/Cr/sub 0/./sub 90/N exhibit an antiferromagnetic transition at 280 and 270/sup 0/K respectively. In the system VN--CrN such transitions are observed in the compositions V/sub 0/./sub 05/Cr/sub 0/./sub 98/N, V/sub 0/./sub 10/Cr/sub 0/./sub 95/N and V/sub 0/./sub 21/Cr/sub 0/./sub 84/N at 268, 243, and 190/sup 0/K respectively. All compositions in the system TiN--CrN display weak ferromagnetism due to exchange interaction between uncompensated localized spins of chromium, effected by conduction electrons of titanium. The absence of this phenomenon in the system VN--CrN is due to the slight difference in the strengths of the bonds of the d-electrons with their cations. Overlap of the energy states of the valence electrons of vandium and chromium is postulated in the system VN--CrN.
