In many ways, 1985 could be called the year of the first for hydro turbine manufacturers. Voith Hydro Inc. introduced their first new pressure flume machine, while both Allis-Chalmers and Axel Johnson saw their first pit turbines installed in this country. In Virginia, Columbia Mills became one of the first siphon projects to come on line in the U.S. and, in Maine, C-E/Neyrpic's right-angle bulb turbine, long used in Europe, was installed in the U.S. for the first time. Flygt Corp. installed their submersible turbine generators in an irrigation project for the first time, and the Marlow project in New Hampshire was the first site in the U.S. to feature the HYDROLEC EH model turbine-generator sets.
