Title: Tunneling measurements on superconductor/insulator/superconductor junctions using single-crystal YBa sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub 7 minus x thin films

Abstract

We have, for the first time, made quasi-particle tunneling measurements on a YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}}(001)/Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}(001)/YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}}(001)junction, which was epitaxially grown on a MgO(100) substrate in an {ital in}-{ital situ} process. Both layers of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} showed the same superconducting transition of {ital T}{sub {ital c} end} =86 K with {Delta}{ital T}({ital R}=10--90%)=1.5 K. Quasi-particle tunneling in the direction perpendicular to the Cu-O planes was measured. A gap parameter {Delta}(4.5 K) of 9.0{plus minus}0.2 meV and a value of 2{Delta}/{ital kT}{sub {ital c}} of 3.5{sup +0.4}{sub {minus}0.6} were obtained.
