Energy conservation through automobile parking management. [From handbook, Energy Conservation and Urban Transportation]
Parking management encompasses all policies for controlling auto use through changes in the supply, price, and design of parking spaces. Inventorying current parking supply, parking relationship to urban environment, and characterizing parking spaces are discussed. Discrete parking strategies to conserve energy are discussed for three strategies: supply, pricing, and design. By selecting appropriate strategies a locality can formulate a comprehensive parking management program. Modification of strategies will be inevitable; careful coordination will be essential. Parking strategies must not only be coordinated with each other, but the resulting parking program must be integrated with other auto management strategies and with strategies that expand auto alternatives.
