Independent investigators have found that sugar can be fermented to alcohol for gasohol in 15 minutes by immobilizing organisms such as Zymomonas mobilis on rotating fibers. Half a pound of Celite has the surface area of a football field and it can be entrapped in the fibers to hold many cells. Many others take several hours. In another design, methanol can be dissociated to CO and H{sub 2} and 30% more energy obtained because waste heat is utilized. When one mol goes to three there is an expansion, and this is provided for. Both these designs result in clean fuels and are covered by U.S. patents.
