Certain organic radicals produced in irradiated aqueous solutions of aliphatic hydrocarbons were studied by using the in situ radiolysis steady-state ESR method. The cyclopentyl radicals were produced as a result of an H-abstraction reaction of H and OH with cyclopentane. Although this radical has a very low steady-state concentration (2 x 10/sup -6/M), it was possible to detect its ESR spectrum together with ..gamma.. splitting and second-order effects. The cyclopentyl radical was also identified in the radiolysis of aqueous solutions of bromocyclopentene at pH 9. The hyperfine splitting constants determined in both cases were quite similar to those values reported in the radiolysis of pure cyclopentane. Similar experiments on cyclohexane did not give an observable spectrum, owing to its very low solubility (6.5 x 10/sup -4/M) and ring conversion. Because H and OH radicals undergo both addition and H-abstraction with cyclopentane, the cyclopentenyl radicals were not observed in the radiolysis of solutions saturated with cyclopentene and N/sub 2/O at neutral pH. On the other hand, O/sup -/ radicals produced in the radiolysis of very basic solutions (pH 12) abstract mainly an allylic hydrogen from cyclopentene. Hence the cyclopentenyl radicals were observed in the radiolysis of aqueous solutions of cyclopentene at pH = 13.5 and its spectrum was determined together with the second-order splittings.
