Title: Characterization of light-harvesting bacteriochlorophyll-protein complexes from photosynthetic bacteria

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7131099

Bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) is the primary light absorbing pigment in the photosynthetic bacteria. While all of the bacteriochlorophyll present in the membranes of a given species of photosynthetic bacteria is structurally homogeneous, it serves two distinctly different functions. The majority of the BChl present in the membranes serves as an antenna or light-harvesting system which transfers excitation energy to a group of specialized BChl molecules called a reaction center. At the reaction center the excitation energy is converted to a charge separation which initiates the process of photosynthesis. Biochemical reactions are described.
