A critical mass study of Hood No. 5 and the filter boat cleaning and testing hood in the 234-5 Building
Abstract
Calculations are presented for the estimated minimum critical mass of Pu that would be allowed in Hood No. 5 and the filter boat cleaning and testing hood of the Plutonium Finishing Plant. Hood No. 5 contains the overflow tank and two vacuum traps. Limits are given for several pile exposure rates. These limits do not allow the approach of personnel into Hood No. 5 when these vessels are full.

Critical mass control specification 7.35 weight percent Pu-A1 alloy fuel element storage gas cylinder storage area, 234-5 building
Plutonium-aluminum fuel elements, which were fabricated at Hanford Atomic Products Operation for a special Atomic Energy Commission program, but were rejected for failure to meet specifications, were returned to Hanford for recovery. These elements, although contaminated during acceptance checking have not been used in the proposed reactor tests. This special material will be stored until recovery is completed. This report provides the critical mass control specification for the 7.35 weight percent Pu-Al alloy fuel element storage gas cylinder storage AREA, 234-5 building. -
Statistical study of variations in yield. 234-5 Building Reduction Operations
This study was made to evaluate the effects of several operatin variables on the yield at the reduction step in motel fabrication. The original question was whether or not the addition of recycled metal to the charge had an effect on the yield. To circumvent possible masking of such as effect by changes in other operating factors, simultaneous data on the weight of Pu in the powder charge, the % conversion of the powder to PuF{sub 4} in the fluorination step, the firing time, and the maximum temperature were also studied. This permitted estimation of the separate effects of almore »
