CFC/HCFC roundtable V
This paper reports that forty-seven leaders from the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry recently met in the nation's capital for an update on the latest developments concerning the future availability of CFC and HCFC refrigerants. Leaders of major trade associations and technical societies were assembled for a comprehensive update on the issue and an opportunity for open discussion among a broad cross section of the HVAC and R industry. At the close of the 1988 Roundtable, those attending requested follow-up Roundtables because of the potential impact on the industry and the rapidity with which the issue was evolving. ASHRAE and ARI responded, and there have now been five Roundtables. The Roundtable has been broadened to include HCFCs which are not a part of the regulatory picture. Although current restrictions apply only to chlorine-containing refrigerants, other environmental considerations must be included in future assessments. The global warming issue is emerging rapidly, and long-range planning must include energy-efficient considerations and the possibility of future regulatory actions on so-called greenhouse gases.
