Metal atom oxidation laser. Master's thesis
A continuation of research investigating the feasibility of a metal atom oxidation laser is presented. The work was done on a metal-atom oxidation laser set-up which was designed and constructed as part of previous thesis research. The series of experiments was conducted with ten rare earth elements in a pure oxygen environment. A brief discussion of the toxicity and handling characteristics of the rare earth elements, the metal oxide laser system, and the possible metal deposition techniques is presented. The technique finally used in the metal deposition process and the difficulties incurred with this technique are also discussed. Although no positive lasing action was noted, results from these experiments suggest further investigation is warranted.
