Using the micro-Raman-spectroscopy technique, three types of phonon Raman spectra of {ital R}{sub 2}BaCuO{sub 5} ({ital R}=Y, Ho, Gd) and Y{sub 2}Ba{sub 0.5}Sr{sub 0.5}CuO{sub 5} corresponding to the main crystallographic directions were obtained in the range 100--700 cm{sup {minus}1} in both parallel and crossed polarizations. Comparing the line shifts upon cation substitution, the polarization properties of the three types of spectra, and taking into account the particular site environments, all {ital A}{sub {ital g}} lines were assigned to definite atomic vibrations.
