A process for producing low boiling aromatic hydrocarbons from hydrocarbon oils heavier than gasoline and containing aliphatics is described that comprises subjecting the oil to a non-hydrogenating cracking and dehydrocyclization treatment in the presence of an oxide of an element from the left-hand column of group V of the periodic table admixed with a cracking catalyst comprising a major proportion of silica and a minor proportion of alumina.
