Title: MLSE and associates report: Engineering and economic analysis of processing used wood pallets, etc. to fuel

Abstract

The pallet, real and container manufacturing industry produces nearly 500 million new units per year and uses over 9 million tons of wood, dry basis. About half of these units are returnable and are reused but eventually all the units must be disposed. With the increasing costs of landfilling and legislation to prohibit wood in landfills there is a need to utilize the wood in these units. Processing units to wood fuel is an option that can be used at many sites. Current methods to reduce pallets to small particles typically uses a primary and a secondary processor. Primary processors typically are tub mills, hammermills, shredders and crushers. Secondary processors are typically hammermills. Magnetic rolls are used to remove magnetic metals from the processed wood. Final size preparation is usually done to remove any over and under sized particles.
